About The Swan

A traditional English pub with a warm welcome, good food, and local ales — right in the heart of Buxton.

Nestled on Buxton’s historic High Street, The Swan is a Grade II listed building thought to date from around 1765, with a licence to operate as a public house granted by 1811. Once known as The Shoulder of Mutton, it has served the town through centuries of change, from the coaching era to Buxton’s development as a spa town.

Inside, traces of its layered history remain visible — the low ceilings, timber beams and narrow passages that reveal how the building evolved over time. One of its most distinctive spaces, the Tartan Room, reflects this heritage: a quiet, characterful lounge lined with patterned fabrics that nod to the building’s 19th-century charm.

Behind The Swan lies St Anne’s Church, considered one of Buxton’s oldest buildings, placing the pub firmly within the town’s rich architectural tapestry.

As the High Street changes around it, The Swan continues to anchor this corner of Buxton, linking centuries of local life in one place.

About Dean and Lorraine

Dean and Lorraine Winstanley are both world champion darts players who bring the same spirit of focus and camaraderie to their pub as they did to the oche. Dean Winstanley

Dean Winstanley is an English former professional darts player best known for his composed style and precision under pressure. Rising quickly through the BDO circuit, he won several major opens and reached the 2011 BDO World Championship final before moving to the PDC, where he became known for his televised nine-dart finish at the 2013 World Championship — still one of the sport’s greatest moments. Nicknamed Over the Top, Dean brings the same focus, calm and good humour to running the pub as he once did on oche.
